Types of Broadband

Fibre Broadband

  • Fibre broadband is the choice for most people nowadays, assuming it's available where you live.
  • Fibre offers fast speeds and stable performance, and is a great choice for streaming music, watching movies or working from home.
  • Speed options can vary, from around 50 Mbps up to 2000Mbps, with the fastest speeds coming from providers who have fibre-to-the-property service. You can filter by speed using our comparison tool.

Cable Broadband

  • Cable broadband offers some of the fastest speeds available and is great for streaming tv & movies, or working for home.
  • There is no phone line required for the service, unlike ADSL broadband.
  • Cable is a popular choice for those wanting a TV package with their broadband service. In the UK the market is dominated by Virgin Media.

ADSL Broadband

  • ADSL is the long-standing service that has provided broadband to homes for decades now. It utilises the same wires as landline phones and is the slowest option for download speeds.
  • ADSL is gradually being phased out of use in the UK, as the fibre and cable infrastructure takes over.
  • It can be a cost effective option if you don't need a particularly fast broadband connection, and may still be the best option where you live, particularly in rural areas.

Broadband Speed Requirements

There are so many options when comparing broadband that it can be difficult to know exactly what package you need. This is important because you could end up overpaying for a service you don't actually require, or get locked in to a contract that doesn't actually do what you need it to because you just chose the cheapest deal. To keep things as simple as possible, there are basically two main things you need to think about:

1) The number of people & devices in the home.
2) The types of things you use broadband for.

You can use our quick guide below to get an idea of the speeds you should be looking at when comparing, and then filter as required on the comparison tool.

For many people in the UK today it's hard to imagine living in a home without broadband. Access to the internet at home, without using mobile data, is considered essential for most people, and beyond browsing the web, broadband is needed to stream music, watch on-demand TV, and make use of smart devices such as cameras, lights and plugs.

The number of people working from home has considerably increased in recent years as well, meaning good broadband connection and an effective wifi router are a must-have. Of course, we all want the best deal possible for our requirements as well, and that's where the DealTree broadband comparison tool can help ensure that you get the service you need, at the best possible price. You can compare deals from over 25 providers in the UK market, just enter your postcode and see what's on offer in your area right now!

FAQs

Do you need a phone line to get broadband?

No. A lot of providers will require a phone line to be part of the contract deal, but if you choose a fibre or cable broadband option then these can be set up without the need for a traditional phone line. You can filter by broadband type, or package type, on our comparison tool.

Can I get any rewards with my broadband deal?

An arrow to toggle the drop down of further text or answers.

Yes, and you can use our comparison tool to filter only deals with rewards. These can be anything but the most common rewards are vouchers or gift cards, bill credits or free months.

Can I get fibre broadband where I live?

Well, basically, it depends and you can use our comparison tool to check using your address and postcode. Chances are if you live in an urban area then there will be several fibre broadband deals on offer. People in more rural places are likely to have less choice.

When is the best time to switch broadband?

An arrow to toggle the drop down of further text or answers.

It's best to compare deals as soon as your contract ends with your current provider. Even if you're happy with the service you have, it's worth seeing what else is out there as you may get the same for less, or be able to upgrade speed for the same money.

Switching whilst you are still in contract will almost definitely mean paying fees to get out of it so you should find out what the cost is to exit early when making any decisions on a new provider .

Is all broadband unlimited download?

An arrow to toggle the drop down of further text or answers.

Nowadays it's very rare to find a provider who isn't giving unlimited data usage. All of the deals should be unlimited downloads, so there's no need to filter, and you can see the information on any deal using our comparison tool, and confirm that it's unlimited before visiting the provider's website to purchase.

Can I get rolling contract broadband to cancel anytime?

An arrow to toggle the drop down of further text or answers.

Yes, there are several providers offering 1 month contract deals that you can cancel anytime. These are useful if you know you're moving in the near future, or just don't want to be tied in to a provider for a year or more. You can filter by 1 month contract offers on our comparison tool, or just use our dedicated no contract broadband deals page.

Do I need to cancel my current broadband to switch?

An arrow to toggle the drop down of further text or answers.

This really depends on what your current service and provider is, and also what you are switching to. If you're switching between standard ADSL providers on the Openreach network then you shouldn't need to cancel. If you're moving to a different network, such as fibre, then it's likely you would need to inform your current provider and cancel.

Generally speaking, your current provider should contact you shortly after you take out a new contract with a different provider. If that doesn't happen, then it's good to assume you need to inform them you're leaving. Also, keep in mind any fees to cancel if you're still in a fixed contract period with your current provider. For peace of mind to ensure you won't end up paying two broadband bills as you switch, it's worth contacting your current provider to inform them.
